In honour of this 110th International Women’s Day, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer is celebrating our women!
Here, we caught up with Dolly Bascou, the Group’s Assistant Marketing Manager, to speak about why this year on 8 March, we must remember both past and present struggles around the world for women’s rights.
This year, we are celebrating the 110th International Women’s Day. Can you tell us what this day means to you?
Dolly Bascou: For me, if the day is going to be meaningful, it has got to remind everyone of why it exists. It must celebrate all the women who have fought for basic rights like the right to vote, equality in family law, equal pay, and so on.
It must also celebrate the women who continue to fight every single day all over the world. It has got to remind us that every nation takes a different path, and that there is still a long way to go.

UN Women has announced that the theme for International Women’s Day (IWD 2021) on 8 March 2021 will be: “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”. What do you take from that?
D.B: COVID or no COVID, I think we need to show tenacity in everything we do both personally and professionally, starting with how we educate our children. COVID-19 is a challenge for all of us, regardless of gender, and now more than ever we have to stand shoulder to shoulder and tackle it together.
As a woman, what has been the biggest challenge in your career to date?
D.B: Although the areas we work in are still very male-dominated, I don’t get the feeling I’ve had to overcome challenges because I’m a woman. I’d be more inclined to say that I stay true to what I believe in whilst still working towards my goals. Successfully finishing a project with my team is what gives me a sense of fulfilment.
Who is your female role model, and why?
D.B: I find brave acts that help to progress human rights to be the most impressive. Rosa Parks springs to mind: the mother of the civil rights movement over in the United States. There were the Suffragettes too, who rallied to get women the right to vote in the United Kingdom, and many more…
